“No, we gonna talk about your little funky attitude.”

“You sound like you trying to perform for your man, Mama. Is he listening on the other side of the door or something?”

“Girl, I’ma…,” Mama threatened as she held her hand up.

I could see the seriousness in her by the way she bit down on her bottom lip. Mama lunged forward but I moved out of the way.

“Come here, girl!”

Mama chased me around the living room and stopped as I entered the kitchen. I was feeling like this was a repeat of the drama I had with Victor, but despite the shit that existed between me and Mama, I had no thoughts about using a knife on her. Mama just stood there. She sounded like she was out of breath. I think she was tired from being so angry more so than chasing me around.

“I’m too old to be dealing with this mess. You want to stay in this house, that’s fine. But until you move, you better watch how you act,” she said.

I paid no real attention to her threat. I brushed it off. I had a smirk on my face. I asked her about the funeral, which to me seemed way more important than worrying about how I was acting toward her or that asshole Victor.

“When is the funeral, Mama? I talked to Luther today.”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

Mama started to walk toward her bedroom. I stepped in her path before she could move any further.

“Why not? You just gonna let Grammy’s body lay up somewhere and not be taken care of? Don’t you care?”

“Leesha, are you gonna help me pay for the funeral? Do you know how much that shit be costing these days? I ain’t got that kind of money!”

“That’s all you ever worry about besides feeding your man. Mama, you ain’t right!”

“I ain’t right? Listen at you! I’m about to slap you in a minute but you lucky I’m feeling so tired. Did that sorry-ass Luther say he gonna help pay for your grandmother’s funeral?”

“Do it matter? We ain’t really talked about it but I’m sure he will—”

“Uh-huh, well I talked to your Uncle Buddy and some of the others and they acting like I should be handling everything. Shit, they calling here asking if I need anything like they gonna come by and bring some damn food or something. But they ain’t talking about paying for the funeral. You got some sorry-ass family, Leesha. I hope you don’t turn out to be the same way.”

I looked at Mama and thought to myself that the only sorry person I’d seen in my family was her. I didn’t respond to her comments. I moved out of her way so she could go on to her bedroom.

Before she was able to close the door behind her, the phone rang. I watched as she picked it up and answered. I walked over and stood in her doorway, hoping that it was some news about Grammy. She deserved better than to have her body not taken care of.
